Cory King’s practice is focused on both providing employers with preventive counsel to avoid employment law risks, and litigating the myriad of employment law claims that employers face.
Cory is a seasoned litigator representing employers in private arbitration and litigation claims before state and federal courts, as well as administrative proceedings before state and federal agencies. His extensive litigation experience includes developing creative and efficient approaches to defending wage/hour (including class action and PAGA claims), harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, whistleblower, breach of contract, unfair competition, and trade secret disputes.
Cory also provides employers with day-to-day advice regarding the formulation and implementation of sound employment practices that reduce the threat of employment litigation, in the areas of wage/hour compliance, hiring, discipline and termination, employment agreements, employee handbooks, policies and procedures, leaves of absence, management training, trade secret protection, and general employment advice. His unique experience and history in the automotive industry makes him particularly adept at advising automotive employers regarding customized compensation programs to navigate and comply with California’s complex wage/hour laws.
Employers in a diverse range of industries have benefited from Cory’s counsel, including automotive, restaurant/hospitality, private security, tech, manufacturing, and construction. Having represented automobile dealerships, collision repair centers, and motorcycle dealerships for many years, Cory has a tremendous understanding of the issues faced by employers in this industry. His experience working in the industry prior to becoming an attorney provides a unique and valuable perspective in representing automotive clients. He is very active in automotive industry groups, serving as labor and employment counsel for the California Autobody Association and the California Motorcycle Dealers Association. He is also active in the national Collision Industry Conference and has served as Chair of its Human Resources Committee for several years. He also prepared and filed an Amicus Curiae brief to the California Supreme Court on behalf of the California New Car Dealers Association protecting important legal protections for employers. Understanding that legislative changes are one of the major factors impacting his clients’ daily operations, Cory is also heavily involved in legislation at the ground level.
Cory has assisted in drafting pro-employer changes to California’s version of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act, and has provided testimony before the California State Senate Judiciary Committee regarding these changes. Cory was also an active participant in public hearings and provided comments on proposed regulations governing mandatory supervisor sexual harassment training (AB1825) to the Fair Employment and Housing Commission. Cory frequently lectures to industry and employer groups throughout the U.S. on emerging labor and employment law issues. He has also conducted dozens of employment law workshops and has been asked to speak to a variety of business groups and at numerous conventions.
